Originating from Turkey in 1920, this antique traditional Gordes wool rug features a rippling medallion-style field design with both rich and bright colorways. Hand knotted in high-quality wool, the series of perfectly repeating beige and red floral medallions bears a mild but intriguing resemblance to Herati patterns, though this style is intercepted by softer, more classical rose and carnation symbols in the mirrored and middle borders. These symbols, representing the garden of Eden, introduce brighter pink and yellow colorways as well as more stylized black and red outlines in the middle border, lending a dimensional contrast to the black backgrounds of the inner and outermost borders before giving way to the finely woven guard border, which wraps the rug with a symbol of running water and vitality.
