Antique Khotan Transitional Red and Blue Wool Rug 10917

Originating from East Turkestan in 1920s, this antique Khotan rug features an all-over field design, including meaningful regional symbols drawn in a transitional style. Handwoven in high quality wool, the textural light blue field features geometric-floral rows of pomegranate branches, a distinct symbol of fertility, bountiful harvest, and vitality in special Khotan rugs. What’s more uncommon is that these pomegranate symbols are so repetitious and closely drawn together, whereas other pieces usually emphasize their presence in a picture, likely intended to highlight a rare season of growth at the time of its origin. The borders wrap the field as a continuous drawing with sharp black, beige, brown, and blue floral patterns, uniquely and gracefully transitioning into a more finely woven minutia as it reaches the edge.
