Originating from Russia between 1880-1900, this vintage Karabagh runner enjoys both tribal geometric and European floral influences in this all over field design. Hand knotted in high quality wool, the combination of oak brown, Beige/Brown, and pink colourways resembles many Aubusson pieces of the period throughout the likewise-derivative floral cartouches in the field, while the interwoven geometric people motifs embody more traditional Eastern symbols of the weaver in the rug, as well as possible fertility representations. Additionally unique to this piece is the vertical asymmetry of the field pattern, contrasted by the wrapping floral medallions of the border for an individualistic portrait in any space.
