Originating from Turkey in 1960, this vintage Turkish wool kilim rug depicts an uncommon abundance of culturally significant symbols. Flat woven in high quality wool, each alternating row features a completely individualistic array of stars–Turkish symbols of happiness and good fortune–in multicolored arrangements of golden-yellow, purple, gray, red, multi tonal blue, orange, and green colorways. The geometric symbols within the alternating rows with tan outlines strongly resemble combs–symbols of fertility and protection–in similar but uniform hues against black backgrounds. The sheer variation of non-formulaic colourways, complemented by the abundance of these respective symbols (known for a more particular, balanced employment in other pieces), both contribute to the individuality and emphasis on fortune permeating this piece.
