What are patchwork rugs, and why are they one of a kind?
Rug & Kilim’s next wave of patchwork rugs arrives this month. With it comes an opportunity to zoom in on the fabulous new form, and its subtle nod to classic styles.
“Patchwork” is the literal name for hand-knotted rugs and handwoven Kilims made from patches of other works into new creations. Examples of the technique exist from as early as 980 B.C. Egypt and ancient China, but the patchwork rug most know has been more present since the 18th century.
The technique, which brings several designs into one new look, always has a modern feel to it, however old. This is just one of many reasons the style has touched so many cultures, and is continuing to evolve into more gorgeous variations today.
Our Patchwork Kilims: Infinite Variation, Limitless Possibility

Modern patchwork rugs have many faces, but those that use antique and vintage elements are especially coveted today.
Our patchwork Kilim is the ideal example of this principal, and an entirely new take on the style, too. In it, we repurpose vintage yarns and patches in a more meticulous, modern take on the Persian panel weaving style (which inspires the ‘columns’ you see). Through this we create a new look every time, while the feel remains consistent and reliable. No two pieces are ever exactly the same, and yet that’s the beauty we love — a smart, more soothing take on polychromatic rugs. (Not to mention the yarns keep their irreplaceable vintage hues, and who doesn’t love retro color?)
More area rugs, circle rugs and square rugs, runners and even oversized rugs came this month, and we can’t wait to see where they find a home. The sheer variety of sizes is a great resource, but we’ve also welcomed an assortment of custom samples in the showroom as well. Custom stair runners, gallery rug and living room rugs just like the piece above are just a handful of exciting new projects, and there’s always more ahead.
