Top 10 Rugs and Kilims of September, 2022: Fall’s First Team Picks from the Rug & Kilim Staff

          Though the leaves begin to wilt, the Rug & Kilim family dwells more on growth than ever this fall — its many blessings and tolls alike. 

          The cozy season comes, and with it our busy season arrives in force as fall brings trends new and old to bear. With the cold wind comes many warm welcomes and fewer moments between projects than ever before. We’re always happy to welcome fresh inventory and new hires — if not especially when we need them most. The lesser-known price of growth for an atelier, though? Opportunities and milestones tend to lead us a long way from home.

          The home team is all over the map this month, both cities away and overseas, to explore some exciting prospects. Some see to our expansion, others celebrate their own personal milestones we’re proud to share in, and all of us here in New York can’t help but miss a few familiar faces even while so many others pay us a visit to see what’s new.

          So, we hope you’ll admire this edition of Rug of the Month as it celebrates the many joys this team, and the individuals that drive it, welcome this September. This is the time when the days grow shorter and the warmth of home means more than ever, so why not fill it with things that make you smile? 

Josh Nazmiyal is Ready for Cozy Rugs

         We all understand when Principal Josh Nazmiyal can’t pick a favorite, but this month I have selfish reasons. Fall, to me, is all about texture and warmth, and our esteemed founder’s September pick is one after my own heart.

         Josh shares my love of high-pile rugs with a lush selection from our custom rug samples. This 2×3’s plush, textural beauty and sheen wool practically dares one to walk over it, sleep on it, and admire it — especially on a cold Autumn day. We can’t wait to see more designers come create with it.

Nina Gilden is All Over this Open Field Art Deco Rug 

         Sales and eCommerce’s Nina Gilden celebrates her birthday in Paris this month, but her eye for chic and love for all things French is ever with us in NYC. 

         Nina’s September is all about one of the most one-0f-a-kind antique French Deco rugs Josh has ever seen. It’s an exemplar of elegant detail, with notes of chartreuse green and a gold frame made to fall into (and Nina clearly agrees). 

Vice President Sina Nazmiyal Likes What Sells

         VP Sina Nazmiyal has fast become a leader in Rug & Kilim’s expansion, and especially in his presence in new exhibitions and marketing opportunities. This year Sina represents us in Singapore at the FIND Design Fair, where he explores daring new work and rising names in our industry. 

         While we await his return, Sina’s pick is the latest 10×14 edition of one of our most well-received Scandinavian Kilim designs. His journey takes him through Bangkok and Chiang Mai, though, so we may be waiting a little longer. (All work and no play is a waste of a trip across the world, after all.) 

Lead Designer Nikita Nagpal Tackles Mid-Century Modernism

         Rug & Kilim congratulates Lead Designer Nikita Nagpal, who was married on September 30 in a New York ceremony. We couldn’t be more proud to see her grow and thrive both professionally and personally as a vital member of our family. 

         Nikita’s September pick is her 6×8 design in our Mid-Century Modern Collection, and a bold exploration of atomic-age patterns in a modern quality. Its sharp curves, retro colors, and graphic movement capture the 50s feel in an all-new fashion. 

VP Cyrus Nazmiyal Picks Autumnal Colors and Modern Classics

         One colleague marries and another returns from his honeymoon. Our newly returned Cyrus Nazmiyal doesn’t miss a beat, as he readies new inventory for another Fall Market at High Point.

         Cyrus’ September pick is a new addition to our Modern Classics Collection, and one of few extra-long runners of its size. This Persian Sultanabad rug sampler evokes sweater weather vibes with warm orange and crisp, cozy floral patterns.

Sales’ Justin King Explores the Other Meaning of Autumnal

         Sales’ Justin King celebrates a modern sense of Autumnal design with a contemporary 16×22 addition to our Moroccan Collection.

        Justin’s pick is in praise of forgiving colors, simple geometry, and more gracious large size than the style has ever seen before. A perfect choice for the fall living room.

Sales’ Todd Neitring Goes for Classic Autumnal Vibes

         Meanwhile, Sales’ Todd Neitring chooses a classic take on Autumnal style and an elegant 9×12 addition to our Modern Classics Collection.

         Here, Todd can’t help but see a sense of Southern charm in the pattern, and admire these deep, sophisticated colors. An elegant choice for a dining room. 

eCommerce Director Andy Yoon Wants French Deco the way of High-and-Low

The more we miss him since he moved home to Ohio to work remote, the more eCommerce Director Andy Yoon’s visits are a treat to the home team. Their timing seems impeccable, too, as his latest visit brought him back just in time to see the first fall additions to our Deco Collection.

         Andy’s September pick is a take on Leleu-esque French Deco rugs, with smart color in the most subtle high-low texture we’ve achieved in this line. 

Digital Imaging Brings Summer to September

            Brisk Autumn days may be here, but Digital Imaging duo Andres Mercado and Tiphaine Sete are still clinging to summer’s warm and colorful days. 

           Our photography team’s September pick is a polychromatic addition to our new Moroccan rugs, and a labor of love in its craft. Here our design pays homage to the Boucherouite weaving style, and recaptures the vibrant presence of Berber magic made to brighten any room.

Editor’s Pick: Autumn is for ‘Leaf Pile’ Rugs

           Like I said — Fall, to me, is all about texture and warmth, but a little bit of collectible kitsch is the other way to this author’s heart.

           My September pick is a vintage 5×6 Tulu rug, and a rare pictorial you’d seldom see in this style. Any jokes about falling leaves would be too on-the-nose, even for my tastes, so I’ll praise its delicious foliage hues, cozy pile and versatile size as I picture it in my own entryway. It’s one of the most special Tulus from those we’ve welcomed this month, and as much a work of rustic charm and folk art as an uncommon mid-century curation.
