Signed Pontremoli Vintage English Palace Rug, Gold with Medallion - Rug & Kilim
This colossal and utterly magnificent textile, handwoven and executed ad ago (by the needle), is an antique English palace rug of a particularly outstanding provenance, originating circa 1930-1940. This masterpiece is the work of J.M.P. Pontremoli, an exceptional weaver whose London workshop was celebrated for reviving historical English and Italian needlepoint techniques. This monumental piece is an essential highlight of Rug & Kilim's European Collection, representing the luxurious Historical Revival style that defined high-end European interiors during the 1930s.On the Design: This extraordinary needlework masterpiece represents the pinnacle of Jacques Mereno Pontremoli's (1886-1952) workshop production, executed at his legendary laboratory where Italian Sephardic craftsmanship traditions merged with English decorative arts excellence. Created in the early 1930s for the ballroom of Somerset House, Stratford Place, this monumental work required eleven trained women artisans two years to complete using meticulous curtain stitch combining gros-point and petit-point techniques. The rare JMP signature confirms its prestigious provenance from the workshop that held Royal Warrant under HM Queen Mary and served illustrious clients including the Duke of Kent. This masterful specimen joins Rug & Kilim's most distinguished acquisitions as a documented example of Anglo-Italian decorative arts at their absolute zenith. The composition bathes the room in soft light, defined by its luminous cream and pale gold field. The design centers on a majestic Regal Medallion, a classical form ringed by scrolling arabesques and stylized botanical elements in soft mint green and gold. This central elegance is held captive by a wide border teeming with robust, stylized floral sprays and cartouches rendered in a vibrant yet sun-faded palette of gold, saffron, and muted red. This sophisticated design bridges historical styles—echoing the grandeur of 17th-century European needlework. This deep reverence for heritage is a direct reflection of the Pontremoli family's legacy, who brought their Italian mastery of fine arts and classical craftsmanship to England, thereby enriching the nation's decorative arts. It is a work of exceptional artistry and heritage, embodying the finest traditions of European decorative arts with a 20th-century clarity. The early 1930s creation date and rare JMP signature make it particularly significant within Pontremoli production chronology. References in Mayorcas's English Needlework Carpets and Lewis's The Pontremoli Collection confirm its art historical importance.Condition:
