This modern Kilim represents a selection of distinct new patterns joining Rug & Kilim’s titular Kilim & Flat Weave Collection, with this piece representing a subcollection uniquely handwoven from the yarns of classic textiles and Kilims to create this transitional flat weave and its lively, varied colorway. The intricate variations of color create an intriguing sense of movement through juxtaposition, namely the abrashed look within the chevron stripes of red, pink, and purple hues in the all-over field pattern. The play of the subtle variations within the prevailing colorways with such a vibrant array of hues lends an arresting complement to the already fun, lively appeal this item offers a variety of interiors. A Glossary of Handmade Rugs and Kilims: Understanding Terms, Types and Techniques Past and Present

Referring to the art style characterized by using shape and color withdrawn from traditional repetition or realism. Abstract rugs — sometimes referred to as art rugs — capture an expressive nature that reads as a very modern style, though many abstract rugs draw inspiration from works of the same art style in the mid-century. One of the more widely known mid-century lineages of this style is abstract expressionism, named for the literal "expressionists" of the 1950s. Some of the most notable names behind this style include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Referring to a lineage of nomadic Persian rugs (sometimes referred to as “Avsar” in the alternate spelling). Afshar rugs hail from the eponymous tribe in the region of Northeastern Iran.

In line with Josh’s pioneering spirit, our flat weave line in Rug & Kilim’s Scandinavian collection enjoys fresh, invigorating designs and a durable body we’ve come to consider the hallmark of this collection; never buckling underfoot like traditional Kilims and blending a beautiful variety of yarns for a high-quality wool. While all Kilim rugs are united under the flat-weaving technique that has been adopted and specialized from culture to culture over time, some of the most significant ancestral Kilim rugs can be found among the varied tribes and regions stretching back to Anatolia/Turkey, Persia, Europe, Scandinavia, and Africa—all home to celebrated variations of flat weaving Josh Nazmiyal has studied and collected among Rug & Kilim’s Antique & Vintage, Kilim & Flat Weave, and Moroccan Collections to name a few.
