Agra Rugs in Art, Architecture and Global Design Culture
Among the great weaving traditions of the Indian subcontinent, Agra rugs occupy a distinguished position shaped by Mughal artistic refinement, Persian influence, and centuries of decorative innovation. Originating from the historic city of Agra in northern India—once a major center of the Mughal Empire—these carpets represent one of the most intellectually sophisticated textile traditions within global decorative arts. Unlike purely tribal carpets or highly formal European weavings, Agra rugs synthesize multiple cultural vocabularies into a unified visual language defined by monumental scale, refined ornamentation, and extraordinary compositional balance. Their designs draw from Persian court aesthetics, Islamic geometry, Indian botanical symbolism, and architectural inspirations associated with Mughal palaces and gardens.

Oushak Rugs – An Oriental Guide to History, Styles and Significance
Originating from western Turkey, the elegance of Oushak rugs traces back to the 15th century Ottoman Empire. These antique masterpieces, first hand-knotted in the city of Usak, were crafted with high-end, lustrous wool in subtle, glowing hues. The hallmark of Oushak rugs lies in their expansive floral designs that radiate from the center, a distinct departure from the intricate florals and geometric shapes of Persian counterparts. The allure of Oushak rugs transcended the Ottoman borders during the Renaissance, captivating European connoisseurs who admired their serene beauty. This surge in demand led to expanded production, ensuring that these exquisite Oushak carpets adorned the finest European country homes and palaces. Notably, their understated colors and harmonious patterns make them a favorite among contemporary designers, evoking a sense of tranquility and timeless sophistication.

A Glossary of Handmade Rugs and Kilims: Understanding Terms, Types and Techniques Past and Present
Referring to the art style characterized by using shape and color withdrawn from traditional repetition or realism. Abstract rugs — sometimes referred to as art rugs — capture an expressive nature that reads as a very modern style, though many abstract rugs draw inspiration from works of the same art style in the mid-century. One of the more widely known mid-century lineages of this style is abstract expressionism, named for the literal "expressionists" of the 1950s. Some of the most notable names behind this style include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Referring to a lineage of nomadic Persian rugs (sometimes referred to as “Avsar” in the alternate spelling). Afshar rugs hail from the eponymous tribe in the region of Northeastern Iran.

An Abbreviated History of Kilim and Flat Weave Rugs
The common denominator of nearly all of our lines, and the passion from which we found our name, lies in our unparalleled Kilim rug collection with selections from all over the world in both the most celebrated and unsung designs. In our antique and vintage collections our Persian, Turkish, and Moroccan Kilim collections alone enjoy rarity, versatility, and beauty with constant additions. In line with Josh’s pioneering spirit, our flat weave line in Rug & Kilim’s Scandinavian collection enjoys fresh, invigorating designs and a durable body we’ve come to consider the hallmark of this collection; never buckling underfoot like traditional Kilims and blending a beautiful variety of yarns for a high-quality wool. While all Kilim rugs are united under the flat-weaving technique that has been adopted and specialized from culture to culture over time, some of the most significant ancestral Kilim rugs can be found among the varied tribes and regions stretching back to Anatolia/Turkey, Persia, Europe, Scandinavia, and Africa—all home to celebrated variations of flat weaving Josh Nazmiyal has studied and collected among Rug & Kilim’s Antique & Vintage, Kilim & Flat Weave, and Moroccan Collections to name a few. Needless to say, Josh’s devotion to learning the intricacies and histories of the style have, likewise, inspired pillars of our most well-received private collections, notably including our Scandinavian Flat Weave collection among the homes for contemporary and modern Kilim worth noting in our archives:
