Hand-knotted in wool, this 11x20 oversized Antique European rug features a play of all-over and medallion style, with geometric patterns and a large central floral medallion in navy blue. On the Design: Admirers of the craft may note this piece’s inspiration from 17th-century Oushak rug designs—known to favor rich browns like those rugs underscoring this combination of medallion and all-over geometric patterns. This antique Oushak rug enjoys both exceptionally uncommon, luminous colorways and a distinctly European interpretation of eastern rug patterns in its geometric-floral medallion field design. One of our richest curations of any collection, not to mention one of the most spacious pieces to ever undertake the Oushak aesthetic in a large size—an extremely collectible piece worthy of the most special, sophisticated spaces. Provenance, Structure, Intelligibility: The Three Pillars of Serious Collecting

Anyone can acquire a rug. To collect one, to bring it into a serious collection with the confidence that it belongs there, requires a discipline, and that discipline rests on three questions. Across four decades of building one of the most significant archives in the country, this house has come to evaluate every object through the same three. They are the difference between buying and collecting, and they are worth setting down plainly, because they apply as readily to a Safavid fragment as to a signed Aubusson, and because they are the same three questions, at bottom, that a curator at the Metropolitan or a specialist at Christie's brings to any object of consequence.

Antique 17th Century French Beauvais Tapestry with Floral Vase - Rug & Kilim, NO. 36829 We had a tapestry acquisition unfolding itself in the studio a while ago. Josh and the team just stood there, silently admiring the way the light caught the threads. This was the Antique French Beauvais Tapestry (SKU 36829). It was handwoven in wool, with natural silk accents, circa 1700. When you look at something like that, you do not just see fabric. What you see is the garden of wool and dreams. The precise interlacing of the wefts gives a picture of a gigantic floral vase placed atop an architectural entablature. The botanical imagery is absolutely mesmerizing. There is so much wealth and mystery to it all.

Zeki Müren and the Carpet as Self-Portrait: The Pasha Who Designed His Own Floor

In the showroom of Hüseyin Kaplan, in the Sultanahmet quarter of Istanbul beneath the minarets of the old city, there are more than five hundred carpets that belong to no classical category. They are not Hereke, not Oushak, not the courtly Ottoman medallion weavings that the connoisseur expects from this geography. They are jewel-toned and abstract, shot through with an abstract confidence, and they bear, some of them, the signed ones, a name woven into the border that any Turk and most serious collectors would recognise instantly. They are the work of Zeki Müren, and they constitute one of the most singular bodies of design the twentieth-century carpet has produced.

A Glossary of Handmade Rugs and Kilims: Understanding Terms, Types and Techniques Past and Present

Referring to the art style characterized by using shape and color withdrawn from traditional repetition or realism. Abstract rugs — sometimes referred to as art rugs — capture an expressive nature that reads as a very modern style, though many abstract rugs draw inspiration from works of the same art style in the mid-century. One of the more widely known mid-century lineages of this style is abstract expressionism, named for the literal "expressionists" of the 1950s. Some of the most notable names behind this style include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Referring to a lineage of nomadic Persian rugs (sometimes referred to as “Avsar” in the alternate spelling). Afshar rugs hail from the eponymous tribe in the region of Northeastern Iran.
