How The Objects Around Us Define Us: An Interior As A Self-Portrait
We like to believe we choose our possessions. It is nearer the truth to say that, over time, they choose us back, that the objects we live among slowly become a portrait of who we are, drawn in a language more honest than any we would use to describe ourselves. Show a designer or a collector a person's rooms, and I will tell you what they value, what they have learned, and what they intend to leave behind. The interior is autobiography, whether we mean it to be or not. This is an old idea, and a serious one. The philosophers of every age have understood that we are shaped by what surrounds us, that character is formed not only by what we think and do but by what we choose to keep near. William Morris gave the conviction its most famous form: have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful. It was not decorating advice. It was a moral proposition, that the objects we live with either elevate us or diminish us, and that we are responsible for the company we keep among things as surely as among people.

How U.S.–Iran Tensions Are Reshaping the World of Fine Rugs: From Safavid Courts to Sanction Regimes
There is a room in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where a sixteenth-century Persian carpet stops people mid-stride. Because something in the object itself; its scale, its silence, the particular authority of a thing that has already outlasted three empires makes the ordinary pace of a museum visit feel suddenly inappropriate. The Emperor's Carpet, as it is known, was commissioned in Safavid Iran, passed to Peter the Great of Russia, gifted to the Habsburg Emperor Leopold I in 1698, held by the Austrian Imperial House until 1921, acquired by the Met in 1941, and displayed publicly only twice in the following sixty years because its condition was too fragile to risk. It has survived more political systems than any collector alive today will ever witness. It knows something about geopolitics that no sanctions framework, no bilateral negotiation, no executive order has yet managed to articulate.

Rugs, Tapestries, and the Return of Sacred Interiors: The Fifth Wall of Heirloom Textiles
Enter a collector’s Renaissance salon, where gilded light grazes the shoulder of a Ghirlandaio Madonna and the stillness of a sculpted torso speaks in the silence. Amid this elegance, the floor carries more than weight—it carries narrative. Here lies not just a rug, but a woven fresco, steeped in geometry, texture, and time. It hums like a Savonnerie carpet, blooms like an Aubusson tapestry, and speaks with the visual rhythm of a Raphael altarpiece. At Rug & Kilim, we do not view rugs as mere furnishings. We position them as portable chapels of artistry, loom-born canvases that deserve their place among the highest expressions of fine art. Like the tapestries that once graced European castles and cathedrals, heirloom rugs were once sacred commissions—symbolic, status-laden, and spiritually charged. The time has come to restore their dignity, and to elevate them from décor to design doctrine.

A Glossary of Handmade Rugs and Kilims: Understanding Terms, Types and Techniques Past and Present
Referring to the art style characterized by using shape and color withdrawn from traditional repetition or realism. Abstract rugs — sometimes referred to as art rugs — capture an expressive nature that reads as a very modern style, though many abstract rugs draw inspiration from works of the same art style in the mid-century. One of the more widely known mid-century lineages of this style is abstract expressionism, named for the literal "expressionists" of the 1950s. Some of the most notable names behind this style include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Referring to a lineage of nomadic Persian rugs (sometimes referred to as “Avsar” in the alternate spelling). Afshar rugs hail from the eponymous tribe in the region of Northeastern Iran.
