Antique Heraldic French Tapestry with Gold and Blue Pictorials, from Rug & Kilim

This 9x11 antique Heraldic tapestry is handwoven in wool, and originates from 17th century France. On the Design: Admirers of the craft will appreciate this piece as a rare and extremely collectible work—made during one of the most sought-after periods of French and European weaving alike. In its design, beige-brown, blue and gold tones underscore pictorials of elaborate detail and grandeur in both field and border alike. The border, which is exceptional in both condition and design among works of its period, hosts several depictions of eagles, Greco-Roman cartouches, Cherub angels, and floral patterns (with a notable teal tone in the many gorgeous colors at play). The field, meanwhile, may depict the wedding of King David of Israel and Abigail of Nabal, as told in the Old Testament. This tapestry is a masterpiece in its own right, with a true connoisseur's level of detail, intention, and regal beauty. Condition: This antique tapestry further enjoys good condition for its age and origin.

Anyone can acquire a rug. To collect one, to bring it into a serious collection with the confidence that it belongs there, requires a discipline, and that discipline rests on three questions. Across four decades of building one of the most significant archives in the country, this house has come to evaluate every object through the same three. They are the difference between buying and collecting, and they are worth setting down plainly, because they apply as readily to a Safavid fragment as to a signed Aubusson, and because they are the same three questions, at bottom, that a curator at the Metropolitan or a specialist at Christie's brings to any object of consequence.

What Makes Tibetan Wool the Gold Standard for Custom Rugs

Every great rug begins long before the loom. It begins on the animal, in the place, in the particular conditions that made the fiber what it is. And among all the wools that have ever been spun into a carpet, few can rival the wool of the Tibetan highlands, a material whose superiority is not a matter of marketing but of altitude, climate, and the unhurried logic of the natural world. The sheep of the Tibetan plateau live at elevations that would defeat most living things, thin air, brutal cold, a growing season measured against a sky closer than it has any right to be. Nature's answer to that severity is the fleece. To survive the plateau, the animal must grow a wool of exceptional density and, crucially, of exceptional lanolin content; the natural oil that coats each fiber, repels water, resists soil, and lends the finished yarn a luster and resilience that lowland wools cannot approach. What is hardship for the animal is a gift to the weaver.

Frida Hansen as a Bridge between Norwegian and European tapestry

“I would take up the old Norwegian weaving, renew it, make it available, and also make it a means of employment. And so began my life’s work, which has fulfilled my mind, my artistic desires, and my life.” –Quote from Frida Hansen family papers, as reported in Anniken Thue’s biography, Frida Hansen: En europeer i norsk tekstilkunst (Frida Hansen: A European in Norwegian Textile Art) Universitsforlaget, 1986. Frida Hansen (1855-1931) was a Norwegian textile artist renowned for her work in the Art Nouveau style. Regarded as a bridge between Norwegian and European tapestry, Hansen's weaving designs are considered among the finest in recent European textile art. Museums such as the National Museum – Museum of Applied Art in Oslo, Drammen Museum, Stavanger Art Museum, and the Nordic Museum in Stockholm house her works. The rediscovery of "Southward (Sørover)" is a celebration of Hansen's mastery of the Art Nouveau style and her contributions to Norwegian tapestry traditions. This piece, centered on a theme of Norse mythology, showcases her skill in combining intricate patterns with areas of clear, vibrant colors—a nod to historical Norwegian tapestries. Notably, Hansen created 31 large pictorial flat-weave tapestries in her lifetime, producing at least one very large tapestry annually from the late 1890s to around 1910.

Referring to the art style characterized by using shape and color withdrawn from traditional repetition or realism. Abstract rugs — sometimes referred to as art rugs — capture an expressive nature that reads as a very modern style, though many abstract rugs draw inspiration from works of the same art style in the mid-century. One of the more widely known mid-century lineages of this style is abstract expressionism, named for the literal "expressionists" of the 1950s. Some of the most notable names behind this style include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Referring to a lineage of nomadic Persian rugs (sometimes referred to as “Avsar” in the alternate spelling). Afshar rugs hail from the eponymous tribe in the region of Northeastern Iran.
