Handwoven in wool, this 8x10 contemporary rug by Rug & Kilim is inspired by antique Tudor rugs, flatweaves and tapestries—a new unveiling from the European rug collection. On the Design: This modern rug is from the earliest custom works by R&K Principal Jahanshah Nazmiyal, newly released for the first time and never-before used. With white and beige-brown field design, this rug features muted floral patterns with gold accents. Keen eyes for detail may admire a high-and-low texture and the skill it takes to execute these fine curves in the floral patterns on such a large scale—which admirers of the craft will note was the first introduction of such a textural element to these patterns. The design enjoys a refined approach to a classic, painterly look with a beautiful blend of colors and execution of florals worthy of the masterpieces that inspired this collection.

The Evolution of Floral Motifs in Antique Rugs and Kilims: Mapping the Pomegranate, Tulip, and Carnation

Antique 17th Century French Beauvais Tapestry with Floral Vase - Rug & Kilim, NO. 36829 We had a tapestry acquisition unfolding itself in the studio a while ago. Josh and the team just stood there, silently admiring the way the light caught the threads. This was the Antique French Beauvais Tapestry (SKU 36829). It was handwoven in wool, with natural silk accents, circa 1700. When you look at something like that, you do not just see fabric. What you see is the garden of wool and dreams. The precise interlacing of the wefts gives a picture of a gigantic floral vase placed atop an architectural entablature. The botanical imagery is absolutely mesmerizing. There is so much wealth and mystery to it all.

Christian Bérard, Jean-Michel Frank, and the Making of Nelson Rockefeller’s Most Personal Room

In April 1939, the SS Normandie docked in New York Harbor carrying, somewhere in her hold, a rolled carpet. The Normandie was herself the most extravagant object afloat; an emblem of French luxury and design, her marble lounges dressed with Aubusson carpets, signed furniture, and exceptional lighting, a vessel so audaciously beautiful that the New York Times had described her maiden crossing as "the greatest mass of steel and machinery ever to sail the sea." She was also, in April 1939, five months from her last voyage. Germany would invade Poland in September. The Normandie would be seized by the United States Navy, catch fire during conversion to a troopship, and capsize into the Hudson River, taking with her the full weight of the civilization she had been built to represent.

Zeki Müren and the Carpet as Self-Portrait: The Pasha Who Designed His Own Floor

In the showroom of Hüseyin Kaplan, in the Sultanahmet quarter of Istanbul beneath the minarets of the old city, there are more than five hundred carpets that belong to no classical category. They are not Hereke, not Oushak, not the courtly Ottoman medallion weavings that the connoisseur expects from this geography. They are jewel-toned and abstract, shot through with an abstract confidence, and they bear, some of them, the signed ones, a name woven into the border that any Turk and most serious collectors would recognise instantly. They are the work of Zeki Müren, and they constitute one of the most singular bodies of design the twentieth-century carpet has produced.

A Glossary of Handmade Rugs and Kilims: Understanding Terms, Types and Techniques Past and Present

Referring to the art style characterized by using shape and color withdrawn from traditional repetition or realism. Abstract rugs — sometimes referred to as art rugs — capture an expressive nature that reads as a very modern style, though many abstract rugs draw inspiration from works of the same art style in the mid-century. One of the more widely known mid-century lineages of this style is abstract expressionism, named for the literal "expressionists" of the 1950s. Some of the most notable names behind this style include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Referring to a lineage of nomadic Persian rugs (sometimes referred to as “Avsar” in the alternate spelling). Afshar rugs hail from the eponymous tribe in the region of Northeastern Iran.

It’s not overstating to say the concept of home has been more on the mind than ever this year, given the unique circumstances of this year. Home has always been the place we go to seek comfort from the outside world. With a year unlike any most of us have experienced since , home has now become an office, a school or perhaps even a restaurant. Whatever the current circumstances, many people are now looking at their personal surroundings with a fresh and more critical eye and seem to be ready to make changes. When we first entered this situation, many reliable market indicators pointed towards one among the sparse upsides to this year, namely forecasting positive growth in many home-décor categories — and that welcomed news seemed to prove itself both to us and our colleagues in the industry over the last half a year of reflection. We especially found ourselves more consumed by unusual projects for custom rugs than many years to the trade prior, both here at home in New York and around the country where even some of our most respected colleagues in other states simply couldn’t cater to the unusual rooms we’ve become a part of this year.
