Relaxed Elegance
By Brittany Bromley. — Rizzoli, 2025
Contemporary, Interior Design
The first book from interior designer Bromley, whose rooms brim with a welcoming sensibility that reveal her fresh, colorful, pattern-filled take on traditional design. Known for a pretty and polished Palm Beach meets Park Avenue aesthetic, Bromley’s interiors are beloved. Often described as “classic with a kick,” her work is steeped in history but infused with a modernity that reflects how her clients want to live today.

The Evolution of Floral Motifs in Antique Rugs and Kilims: Mapping the Pomegranate, Tulip, and Carnation
Antique 17th Century French Beauvais Tapestry with Floral Vase - Rug & Kilim, NO. 36829 We had a tapestry acquisition unfolding itself in the studio a while ago. Josh and the team just stood there, silently admiring the way the light caught the threads. This was the Antique French Beauvais Tapestry (SKU 36829). It was handwoven in wool, with natural silk accents, circa 1700. When you look at something like that, you do not just see fabric. What you see is the garden of wool and dreams. The precise interlacing of the wefts gives a picture of a gigantic floral vase placed atop an architectural entablature. The botanical imagery is absolutely mesmerizing. There is so much wealth and mystery to it all.

Vintage Andean Frazada Kilim and the Three Thousand Years of Living Memory Held in Its Weave
The most sophisticated rooms in America are being furnished, increasingly, with an object its makers never intended to sell. The Andean frazada, a handwoven kilim produced for centuries in the high villages of Peru and Bolivia for one reason only, to survive the cold, has become one of the most quietly coveted textiles in contemporary design. Collectors who could specify anything are choosing these. The reason has nothing to do with trend, and everything to do with what a frazada actually is. To understand a frazada, you must first understand the altitude. Above four thousand meters in the Andes, higher than any peak in the contiguous United States, in air so thin that newcomers move slowly and sleep poorly for days, the cold is not a season. It is a constant. It arrives every night, regardless of the calendar, and it has arrived every night for as long as people have lived in these mountains. The frazada was the answer to that cold: a thick, dense, hand-woven wool blanket, made not for sale, not for export, not for the floors of distant apartments, but for survival. For warmth. For the bed of a family that would not otherwise make it through the dark.

Rug & Kilim’s Tapestry Artists’ Series: In Dialogue with Joanne Soroka
There are artists who weave cloth and the ones who weave ideas. And then there are artists; rare, serious, working at a register that most practitioners of any medium never reach, who weave lives. Not their own lives, though those are present too, but the lives of people who left no other record: emigrants who crossed oceans under duress, ancestors who worked rivers in foreign countries, families scattered across continents by persecution and necessity and the simple human desire for somewhere better than where they were. Joanne Soroka weaves these lives. She gives them, as she has said herself, the meaning that history denied them. The loom, in her hands then, is an act of remembrance, slow, physical, irreversible, and as close to justice as textile art has ever come.

A Rug & Kilim’s Guide to Rug Patterns in Interior Design: A Study of Persian, European, Scandinavian, Art Deco and Modern Styles
There are rooms - rare, disciplined rooms, where nothing is accidental. A salon overlooking Lake Como, where a 19th-century Aubusson anchors parquet floors beneath frescoed ceilings. A Manhattan interior shaped by the restraint of Peter Marino, where a Scandinavian flatweave holds its ground against glass, steel, and silence. A private riad in Marrakech, where tribal geometry converses effortlessly with shadow, plaster, and time. In such spaces, pattern is not simply chosen. To understand pattern at this level is to move beyond decoration into discipline. Great decorators and architects like Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, Le Corbusier, and Gio Ponti never treated surfaces as passive. Floors, like walls and ceilings, were compositional fields governed by proportion, rhythm, and intellectual clarity.

How are Dhurries Becoming the Sustainable Statement Pieces in High-End Interior Design?
True refinement no longer announces itself through opulence—it is embedded in texture, form, and the story beneath the surface. Among the world’s most enduring yet misunderstood textiles, the dhurrie stands apart as an exemplar in restraint, geometry, and cultural transmission. Woven entirely by hand on horizontal looms, these flatwoven masterpieces predate dynasties, outlast empires, and quietly inhabit the palaces of Rajasthan, the salons of Lutyens’ Delhi, and the barefoot minimalism of Belgian farmhouses. For centuries, the dhurrie has served as both artifact and architecture. It reemerges as a sovereign symbol of restraint, heritage, and functional poetry.

A Glossary of Handmade Rugs and Kilims: Understanding Terms, Types and Techniques Past and Present
Referring to the art style characterized by using shape and color withdrawn from traditional repetition or realism. Abstract rugs — sometimes referred to as art rugs — capture an expressive nature that reads as a very modern style, though many abstract rugs draw inspiration from works of the same art style in the mid-century. One of the more widely known mid-century lineages of this style is abstract expressionism, named for the literal "expressionists" of the 1950s. Some of the most notable names behind this style include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Referring to a lineage of nomadic Persian rugs (sometimes referred to as “Avsar” in the alternate spelling). Afshar rugs hail from the eponymous tribe in the region of Northeastern Iran.
