This oversized 14x21 vintage Arts & Crafts rug, circa 1980-1989 is a one-of-a-kind new curation from Rug & Kilim, among the most collectible, rare treasures of the Fetcher House acquired from the late James Hansen’s collection—a long-revered patron of the Chicago Arts & Crafts Society at Hull House who commissioned several gorgeous commissions for the house, including this oversized rug of such astonishing fine quality. On the Design: Admirers of the craft will know Hansen as a long-respected collector and patron of arts, known in particular for his unique additions to the Fetcher House and their striking revivals of such grand sensibilities as those of William Morris and CFA Voysey. Time, Labor and the Lasting Value of the Handmade Rug

There is a question that hovers, unspoken, over every fine handmade rug: why does it cost what it costs? It is a fair question, and it deserves a serious answer, one that has nothing to do with markup and everything to do with time. So, what a hand-knotted carpet actually is? It is a surface built one knot at a time, each knot tied individually by hand around the threads of a loom, by a weaver working with a knife and a pile of dyed wool. A fine carpet of substantial size contains not thousands of these knots but hundreds of thousands, in the very finest pieces, more than a million. A skilled weaver, working steadily, ties a few thousand in a day. The arithmetic is unforgiving and it is illuminating: a great large carpet represents not months of labor but years, sometimes the sustained effort of several weavers working in concert across the turning of seasons.

The Total Art: Vienna’s Century, From the Gold Frieze to the Contemporary Era

In the dining room of a banker's house in Brussels there is a wall of gold. Klimt designed it; the Stoclet Frieze, a tree of life branching across marble and enamel and coral, a dancer on one side and an embracing couple on the other, the couple a direct rehearsal for the painting the whole world would later know as The Kiss. But to stand in that room, were one ever permitted to, is to understand that the frieze is not the point of it. The point is that the frieze, the marble, the cutlery, the door handles, and the carpet underfoot were all conceived as a single object by a single mind. The Palais Stoclet, built by Josef Hoffmann between 1905 and 1911 and now sealed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the most complete surviving statement of the idea that organised an entire Viennese century: the Gesamtkunstwerk, the total work of art, in which nothing; not the spoon, not the dress, not the floor, ranks below the painting on the wall.

In the winter of 1883, William Morris stood before a room full of wool merchants, manufacturers, and assorted Victorian worthies in a lecture hall in Birmingham and said something that no one in that room was prepared to hear. The decorative arts, he told them, were not decorative at all. They were the most serious form of human making and their degradation under industrial production was not an aesthetic problem but a civilizational one. He had brought, as he often did, an Oriental carpet to make his point. Then he said, in effect: this is what we have lost the capacity to make, and until we recover it, we have no business calling ourselves a culture.

Savonnerie, Aubusson, Gobelins: The Three Ateliers That Defined What Europe Believed a Rug Could Be

In the final years of the sixteenth century, the treasury of France was hemorrhaging. Not to war alone though there had been enough of that but to the East. French silver was flowing steadily toward Persia and the Levant in exchange for knotted-pile carpets, objects of such refinement and such authority that no European workshop had yet produced anything capable of competing with them. Henri IV, who had survived the Wars of Religion and the bankruptcy of a kingdom to sit on the French throne, was not a man inclined to accept a problem he could solve. He installed Pierre Dupont — weaver, entrepreneur, and the most technically accomplished carpet-maker in France in the galleries of the Louvre itself, in workshops beneath the palace's own roof, with a single instruction: make something that does not require us to send money to Persia.
