On the Changing Nature of Money, and a Quiet Shift in How the World’s Great Collections Are Built

As seen in Milieu Magazine’s Summer 2025 Issue, designed by Studio Meghan Eisenbergh, features an antique Amritsar rug from Rug & Kilim’s collection.View More >> Something has changed in the psychology of collecting, and it has changed quietly. For most of the modern era, the serious collector acquired for love, for scholarship, for the pleasure of living with beautiful things, and the question of value, while never absent, sat politely in the background. That arrangement has quietly inverted. Across the last two years, industry surveys have recorded a striking figure: the share of high-net-worth collectors intending to sell from their holdings has fallen from more than half to roughly a quarter. The collector of this moment is not looking to liquidate. They are looking to hold. And they are increasingly treating the objects they acquire not as expenditures but as architecture, as a considered, diversified structure of wealth that also happens to be beautiful.

Luxury Coastal Rugs: Styling High-End Interiors from the Hamptons to the French Riviera

The Problem with “Effortless” The most convincing coastal interiors in the world share a peculiar quality: they appear inevitable. Rooms in the Hamptons, along the French Riviera, in Malibu or Mallorca seem to arrive fully formed; light moving freely, materials perfectly resolved, nothing excessive, nothing missing. The effect is so seamless that it risks being misunderstood as ease. Coastal design, at its highest level, is one of the most demanding exercises in interior architecture. It allows for no distraction, no indulgence, and very little forgiveness. When a room is reduced to light, proportion, and material, every decision becomes visible.

A Rug & Kilim’s Guide to Rug Patterns in Interior Design: A Study of Persian, European, Scandinavian, Art Deco and Modern Styles

There are rooms - rare, disciplined rooms, where nothing is accidental. A salon overlooking Lake Como, where a 19th-century Aubusson anchors parquet floors beneath frescoed ceilings. A Manhattan interior shaped by the restraint of Peter Marino, where a Scandinavian flatweave holds its ground against glass, steel, and silence. A private riad in Marrakech, where tribal geometry converses effortlessly with shadow, plaster, and time. In such spaces, pattern is not simply chosen. To understand pattern at this level is to move beyond decoration into discipline. Great decorators and architects like Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, Le Corbusier, and Gio Ponti never treated surfaces as passive. Floors, like walls and ceilings, were compositional fields governed by proportion, rhythm, and intellectual clarity.

Tuareg Textiles and Design: History, Tribal Craft, and Contemporary Influence

The Sahara has never been short of ideas. It has merely been selective about who hears them. The Tuareg did not set out to create an aesthetic. They created a system. Long before design was professionalized, categorized, or monetized, Tuareg artisans developed a material language governed by movement, restraint, and exacting necessity. What remains today — in textiles, metalwork, and spatial logic — is not folklore but authorship: a coherent design intelligence that continues to inform contemporary practice, whether acknowledged or not. At Rug & Kilim, we approach Tuareg works not as ethnographic specimens, nor as romantic artifacts, but as foundational design objects. They belong not on the margins of decorative history, but firmly within its canon.

A Day in the Life: Inside the Venerable House of Rug & Kilim

The foundations of a great institution are laid not with brick and mortar, but with passion, knowledge, and unwavering commitment to craft. For over four decades, Rug & Kilim has strove for excellence—a family dynasty of textile connoisseurship built upon Jahanshah Nazmiyal's pioneering vision and now continued through the stewardship of his sons, Cyrus and Sina Nazmiyal. To understand textile is to understand human civilization itself. Every knot, every weft, every fiber tells us something profound about culture, commerce, and art expression. This is not merely our business—it is our obsession.

A Guide to Antique and Vintage Moroccan Tuareg Mats

Moroccan Tuareg mats serve as poignant symbols of a fading era, crafted during the early 20th century amidst the nomadic caravans in North Africa. Made from palm and reeds and adorned with camel or goat leather designs, these mats were integral to the nomadic lifestyle, serving as homes that could be rolled up and transported as families moved to new locations. Moroccan art extends beyond carpets to encompass rich mediums of pottery, wood carvings, leatherwork, jewelry, and more. Musée Berbère in Marrakech houses one of North Africa's most compelling collections of Berber artifacts. These diverse mediums showcase intricate designs that serve not only as visual delights but also as protective talismans against negative energies.
