The Long Life of a Green: On Celery, Color of the Year, and the Four Centuries of Weaving That Anticipated It

Every year, the color world makes its pronouncement, and every year the design world turns to see what it has been given. For 2027, Sherwin-Williams has named Celery; a light, airy, herbal green with a yellow undertone, chosen, in the company's words, for a moment that prizes wellness, balance, and connection. It is a soft color with a quiet glow and a faint edge; it pairs, its makers note, with white for something breezy, with cranberry red for something playful, with brown for something elevated. It is, by any measure, a beautiful and intelligent choice. It is also a color the great weavers of the world have understood for four hundred years.

Every Great Collector Owns a Library: On Books, Rugs, and the Knowledge That Connects Them

There has always been a quiet kinship between the rug and the book. Both are objects one lives with rather than merely owns. Both reward the patient return, disclosing more on the tenth encounter than the first. Both are, at their finest, repositories of a civilization's memory; the one held in language, the other in wool. It should surprise no one that the greatest collectors of carpets have almost always been, in the same breath, collectors of the books that explain them. J. Paul Getty kept a scholar's library beside his objects. The Rothschilds, whose carpets now rest in Doha and whose names still move a saleroom, understood a collection as a thing to be studied as much as displayed. To acquire seriously has always meant to read seriously.

A Profile on Bauhaus Master Anni Albers – The “Godmother of Textile Arts”

Anni Albers's significance lies in her transformative impact on textiles, elevating weaving to the status of an art form. At a time when early 20th-century Western fine art was largely confined to painting and sculpture created by men, Albers broke through the conventional boundaries and introduced textiles as a legitimate medium for artistic expression. Her groundbreaking influence became evident in 1949 when the Museum of Modern Art hosted an exhibition solely dedicated to Albers's work, titled "Anni Albers Textiles" This event marked the first instance of a textile artist being featured in a solo show at the prestigious institution. The exhibition, which showcased Albers's innovative and artistic approach to weaving, traveled to 26 museums across the United States and Canada. Albers coined the term "pictorial weaving" for her intricate woven abstractions, emphasizing thread as a carrier of meaning.

Frida Hansen as a Bridge between Norwegian and European tapestry

“I would take up the old Norwegian weaving, renew it, make it available, and also make it a means of employment. And so began my life’s work, which has fulfilled my mind, my artistic desires, and my life.” –Quote from Frida Hansen family papers, as reported in Anniken Thue’s biography, Frida Hansen: En europeer i norsk tekstilkunst (Frida Hansen: A European in Norwegian Textile Art) Universitsforlaget, 1986. Frida Hansen (1855-1931) was a Norwegian textile artist renowned for her work in the Art Nouveau style. Regarded as a bridge between Norwegian and European tapestry, Hansen's weaving designs are considered among the finest in recent European textile art. Museums such as the National Museum – Museum of Applied Art in Oslo, Drammen Museum, Stavanger Art Museum, and the Nordic Museum in Stockholm house her works. The rediscovery of "Southward (Sørover)" is a celebration of Hansen's mastery of the Art Nouveau style and her contributions to Norwegian tapestry traditions. This piece, centered on a theme of Norse mythology, showcases her skill in combining intricate patterns with areas of clear, vibrant colors—a nod to historical Norwegian tapestries. Notably, Hansen created 31 large pictorial flat-weave tapestries in her lifetime, producing at least one very large tapestry annually from the late 1890s to around 1910.

André Arbus: A Brief Intro to a Father of French Art Deco

Above this quote by the same artist is a new, equally celebrated acquisition for the Rug & Kilim Vintage Collection — a signed 7x8 mid-century tapestry by André Arbus. Handwoven in wool circa 1940-1950, its design is one of a kind among Arbus's works, which are some of the most famous rugs, tapestries and textiles of the Art Deco movement admirers of the craft know today. Andre Arbus was born on 17 November 1903 in Toulouse, France. Belonging to a family of furniture designers, he was fated to establish himself amongst the best furniture makers. In his formative years, he studied at the Lycée Pierre-de-Fermat in Toulouse and simultaneously worked with his father - selling furniture that was inspired by the 18th century French style. Later, he graduated at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse.
