The Art of Appraisal: Inside Rug & Kilim’s Culture of Connoisseurship
Rug & Kilim Showroom — a house of woven gems, collected with intention. There is a difference between owning a rug and stewarding one. At Rug & Kilim, appraisal exists at the intersection of scholarship, diplomacy, and design history. To evaluate a textile at the highest level is to understand not only fiber and knot count but courts and ateliers, fashion houses and museums, auction rostrums and private salons. Because in truth, the greatest rugs and tapestries have always belonged to the same cultural tier as painting and architecture. A carpet signed by Jules Leleu does not simply carry a market price; it carries the intellectual weight of Paris between the wars. A tapestry attributed to Jean Lurcat is not merely woven wool; it is postwar Europe reasserting itself through myth and modernism. To appraise such works requires fluency not only in textile technique, but in art history, fashion, architecture, diplomacy—and the subtle codes of elite taste.

An Abbreviated Guide to Antique and Vintage Karabagh Rugs
NO. 34126 Made with hand-knotted wool and originating in Russia circa 1850-1860, this 8x19 antique Karabagh rug and is a rare extra-long runner and oversized addition to Rug & Kilim’s coveted European collection. For centuries, the Karabagh region—poetically called the “Black Garden”—has been a crossroads of empire, craftsmanship, and cultural memory. Its rugs shimmer with expressive geometry, lyrical florals, and natural dyes that have captivated collectors for generations. Today, designers and connoisseurs seek out these pieces not only for their visual presence, but for the emotional resonance they bring into a room. Karabagh rugs are textiles with pulse— woven memoirs whose artistry continues to evolve in dialogue with contemporary interiors. Zeki Müren, Da Silva Bruhns, and Leleu: How These Artists Transformed Rugs into the Language of Modernism
The story of modernism in textiles is often told through architecture, painting, and furniture. Yet, some of the most radical ideas of the 20th century were not framed on walls or set on pedestals—they were laid underfoot. Rugs, once treated as either anonymous craft or as inherited luxury, became a medium for modernist expression. Few figures embody this transformation more than Zeki Müren, Da Silva Bruhns, and Leleu. Each worked in distinct cultural contexts—Müren in postwar Turkey, Da Silva Bruhns in interwar France, and the Leleu firm across early- to mid-century Paris—but together they reframed rugs not as decoration but as a language: one capable of abstraction, geometry, rhythm, and modern life.

The Persian Afshar Rug as Art, Tribal Artifact, and Archive
Afshar rugs are among the most compelling expressions of nomadic Persian weaving. Originating from the Afshar tribe—a semi-nomadic Turkic-speaking group with roots in Central Asia—these rugs represent a distinct confluence of tribal tradition, migratory culture, and artisanal precision. Today, Afshar rugs are recognized for their deeply saturated natural dyes, structurally sound weaving, and the geometric clarity of their aesthetic—qualities that place them alongside Baluch, Shahsavan, and Qashqai weavings in the taxonomy of Persian tribal carpets. Historical Provenance: From Oghuz Migration to Iranian Plateau The Afshars were originally part of the Oghuz Turkic confederation and migrated into Iran during the Seljuk and later Safavid periods (11th–17th centuries). By the 18th century, Afshar tribes were prominently settled in southeastern Iran, particularly around Kerman, Sirjan, Baft, and Rafsanjan—regions that would become critical nodes of rug production.

Rug & Kilim Abroad – “Nomad” Exhibition 2024: The Art of Tribal Weavers Across Borders from Anatolia to Tibet, New Delhi, India
“The more we learn, the less we think we know.” Abiding by this principle, for us at Rug & Kilim, every opportunity becomes a reason to learn more about different rugs and designs. A winter February weekend became one such opportunity for our Editorial’s Bhavna Dahiya to visit the “Nomad Exhibition” organized in New Delhi at the National Crafts Museum, from 30th January 2024 to 12th February 2024. “Nomad”, an extraordinary exhibition showcasing textiles like rugs and kilims (gelims) from the 19th and 20th centuries, exemplifies this line. Curated from the personal collection of Textile Connoisseurs and Founders of “Shades of India” Mandeep and David Housego, these remarkable pieces originate from the expansive regions of Turkey and Turkestan. Each rug, Kilim (or “gelim” in the original Persian), horse blanket and saddlebag exhibited tells a story of nomadic tribes traversing vast landscapes, herding their flocks from lowlands to high mountain pastures. Being resilient and portable, tribal rugs are synonymous with a nomadic life, carrying stories on their woven backs. With their contemporary design sensibility, these hand-spun and hand-woven treasures defy the constraints of time.

A Glossary of Handmade Rugs and Kilims: Understanding Terms, Types and Techniques Past and Present
Referring to the art style characterized by using shape and color withdrawn from traditional repetition or realism. Abstract rugs — sometimes referred to as art rugs — capture an expressive nature that reads as a very modern style, though many abstract rugs draw inspiration from works of the same art style in the mid-century. One of the more widely known mid-century lineages of this style is abstract expressionism, named for the literal "expressionists" of the 1950s. Some of the most notable names behind this style include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Referring to a lineage of nomadic Persian rugs (sometimes referred to as “Avsar” in the alternate spelling). Afshar rugs hail from the eponymous tribe in the region of Northeastern Iran.
