The Art of Appraisal: Inside Rug & Kilim’s Culture of Connoisseurship
Rug & Kilim Showroom — a house of woven gems, collected with intention. There is a difference between owning a rug and stewarding one. At Rug & Kilim, appraisal exists at the intersection of scholarship, diplomacy, and design history. To evaluate a textile at the highest level is to understand not only fiber and knot count but courts and ateliers, fashion houses and museums, auction rostrums and private salons. Because in truth, the greatest rugs and tapestries have always belonged to the same cultural tier as painting and architecture. A carpet signed by Jules Leleu does not simply carry a market price; it carries the intellectual weight of Paris between the wars. A tapestry attributed to Jean Lurcat is not merely woven wool; it is postwar Europe reasserting itself through myth and modernism. To appraise such works requires fluency not only in textile technique, but in art history, fashion, architecture, diplomacy—and the subtle codes of elite taste.

An Abbreviated Guide to Antique and Vintage Karabagh Rugs
NO. 34126 Made with hand-knotted wool and originating in Russia circa 1850-1860, this 8x19 antique Karabagh rug and is a rare extra-long runner and oversized addition to Rug & Kilim’s coveted European collection. For centuries, the Karabagh region—poetically called the “Black Garden”—has been a crossroads of empire, craftsmanship, and cultural memory. Its rugs shimmer with expressive geometry, lyrical florals, and natural dyes that have captivated collectors for generations. Today, designers and connoisseurs seek out these pieces not only for their visual presence, but for the emotional resonance they bring into a room. Karabagh rugs are textiles with pulse— woven memoirs whose artistry continues to evolve in dialogue with contemporary interiors. This guide explores their history, structure, symbolism, and enduring relevance, offering a lens on one of the most intriguing Caucasian weaving traditions.

Zeki Müren, Da Silva Bruhns, and Leleu: How These Artists Transformed Rugs into the Language of Modernism
The story of modernism in textiles is often told through architecture, painting, and furniture. Yet, some of the most radical ideas of the 20th century were not framed on walls or set on pedestals—they were laid underfoot. Rugs, once treated as either anonymous craft or as inherited luxury, became a medium for modernist expression. Few figures embody this transformation more than Zeki Müren, Da Silva Bruhns, and Leleu. Each worked in distinct cultural contexts—Müren in postwar Turkey, Da Silva Bruhns in interwar France, and the Leleu firm across early- to mid-century Paris—but together they reframed rugs not as decoration but as a language: one capable of abstraction, geometry, rhythm, and modern life.

The Rug Reimagined as Haute Couture: Fine Art for the Collectors of Culture
There are ateliers the world recognizes by their mere whisper — Lesage for Chanel’s embroidery, the pleat artisans behind Dior’s silhouettes, the silken sculptors who drape cloth into legend. Yet beneath our feet lies an atelier perhaps less spoken of, though no less sacred. An atelier where legacy does not parade on runways, but unfurls across floorboards. This is the quiet realm of Rug & Kilim — where weaving is not a craft, but a culture, and every rug is haute couture translated into tapestry. A tribute to the rug as heirloom, artwork, and haute couture To step into one of our pieces is not merely to decorate a room — it is to collect. To curate. Just as a Rothko commands its wall not by its size, but by its silence, a Rug & Kilim creation commands presence by its detail, restraint, and profound sense of time. These are not rugs — these are woven paintings, as rare and reverent as a hand-gilded icon from Byzantium or a brushstroke from the École des Beaux-Arts.

A Brief History of Tiger Rugs: The Art and Design of an Iconic Class of Animal Pictorials
Above, custom runner by Rug & Kilim inspired by Tibetan Tiger rugs adorns an upstairs hallway in the work of Cordaro Design. 2022, as the first year of the tiger rug renaissance, was no less than a metamorphosis in the world of fashion, art and design. Art went beyond the obvious — it became a manifesto; a modern language of design that transcends boundaries and celebrates the essence of wild. 2022 as the Chinese year of the Tiger, witnessed the design and fashion industry embracing tigers as the spirit animal and design muse. "Tomorrow’s Tigers" — a global commitment initiated by the World Wide Fund of Nature to double the numbers of tigers around the world — was the featured project ‘Art For Your World’ which helps tackle the climate crisis through the medium of art. It was a major fundraising event observed by twelve acclaimed contemporary designers who introduced new interpretations of tiger rugs, as inspired from predecessors and the wild tiger, and exhibited at Sotheby's London.

A Glossary of Handmade Rugs and Kilims: Understanding Terms, Types and Techniques Past and Present
Referring to the art style characterized by using shape and color withdrawn from traditional repetition or realism. Abstract rugs — sometimes referred to as art rugs — capture an expressive nature that reads as a very modern style, though many abstract rugs draw inspiration from works of the same art style in the mid-century. One of the more widely known mid-century lineages of this style is abstract expressionism, named for the literal "expressionists" of the 1950s. Some of the most notable names behind this style include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Referring to a lineage of nomadic Persian rugs (sometimes referred to as “Avsar” in the alternate spelling). Afshar rugs hail from the eponymous tribe in the region of Northeastern Iran.
