Bauhaus, European, Modernist (20th Century)
Hin Bredendieck (1904–95) graduated from the Bauhaus and was a versatile designer and pioneering teacher of design. A native of Aurich, in East Friesland in Germany, he was a student at the Bauhaus in Dessau from 1927 to 1930. During his time as a student there, Bredendieck worked with Marianne Brandt to design famous lamps such as the “Kandem Bedside Table Lamp,” which can be found on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Every Great Collector Owns a Library: On Books, Rugs, and the Knowledge That Connects Them
There has always been a quiet kinship between the rug and the book. Both are objects one lives with rather than merely owns. Both reward the patient return, disclosing more on the tenth encounter than the first. Both are, at their finest, repositories of a civilization's memory; the one held in language, the other in wool. It should surprise no one that the greatest collectors of carpets have almost always been, in the same breath, collectors of the books that explain them. J. Paul Getty kept a scholar's library beside his objects. The Rothschilds, whose carpets now rest in Doha and whose names still move a saleroom, understood a collection as a thing to be studied as much as displayed. To acquire seriously has always meant to read seriously.

Zeki Müren and the Carpet as Self-Portrait: The Pasha Who Designed His Own Floor
In the showroom of Hüseyin Kaplan, in the Sultanahmet quarter of Istanbul beneath the minarets of the old city, there are more than five hundred carpets that belong to no classical category. They are not Hereke, not Oushak, not the courtly Ottoman medallion weavings that the connoisseur expects from this geography. They are jewel-toned and abstract, shot through with an abstract confidence, and they bear, some of them, the signed ones, a name woven into the border that any Turk and most serious collectors would recognise instantly. They are the work of Zeki Müren, and they constitute one of the most singular bodies of design the twentieth-century carpet has produced.

Deventer, KVT and the Dutch Carpet: The Workshop that Wove for Royalty
The Dutch did not look abroad for the floors of their palaces. This is a small fact with large implications. When the courts of Europe sent to Aubusson and Savonnerie for their carpets, when the very word Smyrna on a label conferred the authority of the East, the House of Orange laid beneath its ceremonial rooms a carpet woven in a river town in the eastern Netherlands, at a factory that had, with a confidence bordering on provocation, named its own street after Smyrna itself. Smyrnastraat, in Deventer. The address of the Koninklijke Vereenigde Tapijtfabrieken, and a declaration of standing made in cobblestone.

Rug & Kilim’s Tapestry Artists’ Series: In Dialogue with Jeni Ross
There is a moment, familiar to anyone who has stood inside a Jeni Ross installation, when the room stops being a room. Not because the work overwhelms the space in the manner of spectacle not because it shouts, but because it restructures. A Ross textile does not hang on a wall so much as claim it, establishing a gravitational field of color and material density that reorganizes everything around it with the quiet authority of a load-bearing element. You do not look at a Jeni Ross. You adjust to it. You find your position in relation to it. The room, in the most literal architectural sense, has acquired a new wall.

The Layered Home: 5 Ways to Rethink Floor Rugs and Wall Tapestries
The real spatial dimension does not get painted, it gets woven. Begin with hanging a piece such as Signed Vintage Lia Cook Tapestry slightly off-center on one of your main walls. Its intricate Jacquard weave and the friction created between its rayon and linen fibers will require a lot of breathing room, immediately establishing a gravitational pull of the whole room. But to balance this vertical tension, the ground beneath your feet needs to become much more rigorous. With the use of a rigorously beaten warp-faced plane such as cotton Indian Dhurrie or Antique Swedish Röllakan's interlocking tapestry weave, you create a flat but structurally resistant base. A ground made from a rigidly woven material needs to be challenged. The last textural transition will come from placing a Vintage Frazada Kilim with heavy weft interlace across your warp-faced plane. The act of overlapping your heavy weft on a rigorously

The Rug That Made the Room: Ten Interiors Where the Carpet Was the Only Decision That Mattered
Every serious designer knows the moment. You walk into a room that is not yet finished; the furniture placed but provisional, the walls painted but unconvinced, the light doing its best with what it has been given and something stops you. Not the chandelier. Not the art. The floor. A carpet lies there with the particular authority of an object that has already decided what the room is going to be, and is waiting, with complete patience, for everything else to catch up. The furniture will be chosen in response to it. The color of the walls will be negotiated against it. The art will be hung at a height that the carpet's scale has already determined. The room, in the most literal sense, begins underfoot.
