Few rug styles have influenced twentieth-century interior design as profoundly as Art Deco rugs. Emerging during one of the most transformative periods in modern cultural history, these carpets embodied the optimism, innovation, and cosmopolitan sophistication that defined the Art Deco movement. More than decorative floor coverings, Art Deco rugs became expressions of a new visual language—one rooted in modernity, luxury, architecture, and artistic experimentation. Unlike traditional Persian carpets that emphasized centuries-old motifs and weaving conventions, Art Deco rugs embraced a distinctly modern perspective. There has always been a quiet kinship between the rug and the book. Both are objects one lives with rather than merely owns. Both reward the patient return, disclosing more on the tenth encounter than the first. Both are, at their finest, repositories of a civilization's memory; the one held in language, the other in wool. It should surprise no one that the greatest collectors of carpets have almost always been, in the same breath, collectors of the books that explain them. J. Paul Getty kept a scholar's library beside his objects. The Rothschilds, whose carpets now rest in Doha and whose names still move a saleroom, understood a collection as a thing to be studied as much as displayed. To acquire seriously has always meant to read seriously.

Across the last two years, industry surveys have recorded a striking figure: the share of high-net-worth collectors intending to sell from their holdings has fallen from more than half to roughly a quarter. The collector of this moment is not looking to liquidate. They are looking to hold. And they are increasingly treating the objects they acquire not as expenditures but as architecture, as a considered, diversified structure of wealth that also happens to be beautiful.

Japandi Style: The East-Meets-West Design as a Fusion of Scandinavian and Japanese Sensibilities

The term "Japandi" is a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian design sensibilities. This unique multicultural style emerged when Danish designers began venturing to Japan, marking the opening of Japan's closed-border policies after 220 years. It was during this period that their designs began to absorb the allure and mystique of this new, intriguing oriental aesthetic. Denmark and Japan have shared a longstanding and dynamic relationship, encompassing both trade and cultural exchanges. According to Nicolina Olsen-Rule of Design Museum Denmark in Copenhagen, this enduring connection dates back approximately 150 years. This historical interaction between the two nations has undoubtedly contributed to the mutual appreciation and influence observed in design, particularly in the emergence of styles like Japandi, which blends elements from both Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics. Early manifestations of this design fusion as ‘Less is More’ can be observed in various forms, including ceramic craftsmanship, architectural elements, and Danish furniture.

A Brief Guide to Zeki Müren Rugs: Our Birthday Commemoration of the Late Artist’s Life and Rare Works

Here, a vintage 3x6 Zeki Müren rug adorns an art gallery design by James Yarosh. Today would be Müren's 91st birthday — he was born Dec. 6, 1931 in Bursa, Turkey, and he passed Sept. 24, 1996 in his Bodrum home. He was an icon to countless, a bold atelier to many like us and an artist like no other to any that know his work as well as we do. Whether you know him as "Sun of Art" or "Model Citizen" or "the David Bowie of Turkey" or Pasha — an affectionate Turkish name for a leader — Müren was a prolific multidisciplinary artist like few of his period, or any for that matter. Of his many accolades in classical music, TV, film and art, Müren was, furthermore, an openly gay man in an Islamic country who regularly challenged gender norms in his performance to such an extent that he remains a figure in Turkey's LGBTQ+ movement today.
