Every Great Collector Owns a Library: On Books, Rugs, and the Knowledge That Connects Them
There has always been a quiet kinship between the rug and the book. Both are objects one lives with rather than merely owns. Both reward the patient return, disclosing more on the tenth encounter than the first. Both are, at their finest, repositories of a civilization's memory; the one held in language, the other in wool. It should surprise no one that the greatest collectors of carpets have almost always been, in the same breath, collectors of the books that explain them. J. Paul Getty kept a scholar's library beside his objects. The Rothschilds, whose carpets now rest in Doha and whose names still move a saleroom, understood a collection as a thing to be studied as much as displayed. To acquire seriously has always meant to read seriously.

Christian Bérard, Jean-Michel Frank, and the Making of Nelson Rockefeller’s Most Personal Room
In April 1939, the SS Normandie docked in New York Harbor carrying, somewhere in her hold, a rolled carpet. The Normandie was herself the most extravagant object afloat; an emblem of French luxury and design, her marble lounges dressed with Aubusson carpets, signed furniture, and exceptional lighting, a vessel so audaciously beautiful that the New York Times had described her maiden crossing as "the greatest mass of steel and machinery ever to sail the sea." She was also, in April 1939, five months from her last voyage. Germany would invade Poland in September. The Normandie would be seized by the United States Navy, catch fire during conversion to a troopship, and capsize into the Hudson River, taking with her the full weight of the civilization she had been built to represent.

The Layered Home: 5 Ways to Rethink Floor Rugs and Wall Tapestries
The real spatial dimension does not get painted, it gets woven. Begin with hanging a piece such as Signed Vintage Lia Cook Tapestry slightly off-center on one of your main walls. Its intricate Jacquard weave and the friction created between its rayon and linen fibers will require a lot of breathing room, immediately establishing a gravitational pull of the whole room. But to balance this vertical tension, the ground beneath your feet needs to become much more rigorous. With the use of a rigorously beaten warp-faced plane such as cotton Indian Dhurrie or Antique Swedish Röllakan's interlocking tapestry weave, you create a flat but structurally resistant base. A ground made from a rigidly woven material needs to be challenged. The last textural transition will come from placing a Vintage Frazada Kilim with heavy weft interlace across your warp-faced plane. The act of overlapping your heavy weft on a rigorously

The Future of High-End Interior Design in the Age of Global Tariffs: Rugs, Trade Routes, and Regulation
As seen in Galerie Magazine, the 2026 Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach features a rare and exceptional curation from the antique rugs in Rug & Kilim’s European Collection. Read More >> Design, at its highest level, has always preferred to appear untouched by politics. A room in the Hamptons. An apartment overlooking Central Park. A villa along the French Riviera. These spaces present themselves as resolved worlds; self-contained, insulated from the volatility of markets, policy, and power. And yet, over the past year, something unusual occurred. Tariffs, as abstract instruments of economic policy, began to leave visible traces within interiors. Not dramatically, not theatrically, but with the quiet persistence of something structural. Lead times shifted. sourcing recalibrated. Materials reconsidered. Conversations that were once aesthetic became quietly strategic.

The Persian Carpet and the Making of Modern Interior: Power, Trade and Redefining Cultural Prestige
Materials from our Books on Persian Rugs. Available at Volumes by Rug & Kilim >> By the late nineteenth century, the Persian carpet had become an essential component of the European interior. Not decorative. Structural. As Qajar Persia expanded trade relationships with Britain, France, and the United States, carpets from Tabriz, Isfahan, Kashan, Kerman, and Sultanabad entered Western markets in unprecedented numbers. This was organized production responding to foreign demand. Workshops adapted scale, palette, and composition for European rooms while maintaining Persian essence. Architecture, Empire, and the Rise of the Cultivated Room The European salon — particularly in Paris and London — required more than furniture and painting. It required cohesion, and Persian carpets provided it.

Rugs, Books, and the Fine Art of Living with Intention: Rug & Kilim’s Dialogue with Art and Literature
A great house is measured not only by what lies underfoot, but by what rests within reach. At Rug & Kilim, The Royal Collection and Volumes are not parallel endeavors—they are twin expressions of the same language: that art, design, and intellect belong in continuous dialogue. Both are products of patronage, atelier discipline, and an unwavering belief that beauty must be structured. A serious interior does not begin with furniture. It begins with a position. For centuries, the rug has been the most intellectually charged plane in a room—the only surface that holds architecture, painting, mythology, and diplomacy in a single field. Likewise, the book is not décor; it is declaration. It reveals the mind that inhabits the space.
