Vintage Moroccan Tuareg Mat with Twin Geometric Medallions in Beige & Red - Rug & Kilim
This 8x12 vintage Moroccan Tuareg mat is a celebrated new addition to Rug & Kilim’s Moroccan collection, handwoven from indigenous reed and leather circa 1950-1959.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft will especially appreciate Tuareg mats as distinct works with their own rich history and unique, masterful craftsmanship, originating from the nomadic Tuareg tribes of the Sahara. This mid-century piece is an extraordinary example of the form, utilizing a tightly woven foundation of native palm reeds that acts as a robust, golden-beige canvas. The design favors a striking, minimalist approach to traditional primitivist Berber geometries, featuring two massive, commanding cruciform medallions. These central motifs are meticulously embroidered using strips of dyed camel or goat leather in warm brick-red and deep taupe tones, creating a natural sense of depth and an arresting dimensionality against the neutral ground. The medallions are elegantly framed by a simple, continuous leather border that anchors the vast design.
The large size and particular scale of this mat further connote a highly significant, intricate work—likely commissioned for an important tent or gathering space and made collaboratively by two or more weavers over many months. The leather detailing reveals subtle, mesmerizing chevron and diamond micro-patterns within the larger geometric framework, showcasing an exceptional level of precision. Beyond its undeniable aesthetic appeal, the use of reed and leather was born of necessity, providing incredible durability against the harsh desert environment while remaining breathable in the heat. Today, it stands as much a highly collectible piece of Saharan folk art and nomadic culture as it is a comfortable, resilient, and deeply textured floor covering for the modern home.
