The Love and Lore of Persian Gabbeh Rugs: Rug & Kilim’s Rare New Curation of Classic Tribal Rugs

          What are Gabbeh rugs, and why is Rug & Kilim so eager to welcome so many to our collection?

          If you’ve been keeping an eye on our antique and vintage collection, you have every reason to be excited, too. Many of its newest additions remark the most primitive rug style, and one-of-the-most collectible shabby-chic styles today.

          Gabbehs are known for thick, lush pile, vibrant colors and archaic geometric patterns. Gabbeh rugs descend from Qashqai nomads; more specifically, a tribe like many Persian tribes known to travel and carry their traditions. This is why so many Gabbehs are in small sizes, similar to antique and vintage Moroccan rugs. Gabbeh matriarchal weavers always had to break down and reassemble their looms to travel.

          Naturally, it was easier for these tribes to carry smaller looms to suit their lifestyle, but the results? These remain the richest works of folk art, like windows into a beautiful culture, and full of possibility today. 

Our Paradise for Pictorial Rugs 

          Gabbeh tribal rugs are also one of the handful of distinguished styles that celebrate pictorial designs. Rugs with pictorials depict animals, people, elaborate settings and even full stories from time to time, but they often represent a glimpse into the weaver’s life and culture. Naturally they’re seldom seen outside a few special styles, but especially to the extent this provenance boasts.              

          This month’s new arrivals are a paradise for pictorial lovers like us, and so distinct from our other tribal curations. Every time Josh regales the team with new finds and little-known facts is the highlight of that week, but I’d be lying if I said he’s not especially thrilled to share this sheer variety of eccentric, unusual designs he’s never seen curated elsewhere. All gift-sized rugs are a great versatile choice for small spaces are playful possibilities, but graphic Gabbehs like these? Such rustic, picturesque drawings, daring palettes, deliciously thick pile — they’re in a league of their own.
